He will never get the death penalty for this. According to the news tonight, he claimed to have been distracted by looking at his cell phone map. I don't believe it. Seeing the video, he was traveling at a horrific speed. I think he like so many other truck drivers just deliberately ran the red light thinking he would be safe. Here in Okinawa it's all I see. As they approach a red light, they turn on their hazards as though saying "I know the light is red but here I come, shitsurei shimasu".

Ambulances here are driven at the same speed of regular traffic. They seldom look like they have a sense of urgency. I hope I will never need an ambulance here in Japan. Scary!

Pretty serious stuff here. So drunk he was passed out and still "thought" he could fly? Really? Wow. I hear there is an opening for 1 pilot for Sunwing Airlines. I'm just glad the flight never took to the air and that everyone is safe.

One statement made here by DocCarlos

Commissaries in the USA they are mostly all closed on the bases now. only military members and their immediate family can use base BX/PX.

This is not true. Bases in the United States still have commissaries and the BX/Commissaries are not off limits to retirees. I travel there often from here and use them all the time. Only BX and Commissary in most European countries are off limits to non-SOFA retirees. Anyway, this is a little off topic, so to get back on topic...there are a few incorrect comments here but most have been corrected by those in the know. Very interesting indeed. Peace, everyone.

Japan is rich, huh? Wow. Generous but can Japan really afford it? I worry.

If only they would remove their traffic signs from inside trees, that would help. Half the traffic signs here are partially or completely embedded in shrubbery. Some are so high you can't even see them. Just placement alone need improvement. And yes, the STOP sign should definitely be octagon in shape even if it is written in Japanese. The shape alone denotes stop. Everyone knows that one.

smithinjapan: I think the article says it was a 66 year old woman who murdered the child. Maybe you meant to say "her", but yeah, agree.

I greatly reduced my frustrating by buying a dash cam (in Japanese it's called ドライブレコーダ. This way I know I have on tape what others do and if someone causes an accident and I'm involved, I can prove my innocence. I think this item should be mandatory for all vehicles, that way people would behave because then they know they are being recorded. Stay safe everyone.

Ed Grubb: That is bad advice. I was a witness to a drunk driver hit and run case (minor but he was still drunk) and made statement. In the end, I was rewarded a small amount of money in cash.

-13 Good Bad kiyoshiMukaiNOV. 26, 2016 - 11:23PM JST We need Duterte --- Very bad. Duterte is a very bad person and murders people. Japan does not need him! I think those arrested in this case will not receive such harsh sentences as most of us think. Japan is very harsh on those who import, smuggle, or otherwise are serious drug dealers. Countries like Singapore and Indonesia most definitely carry out harsh sentences. Death. In my opinion, I think Japanese lawmakers should have a good long meeting with CNN Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta. He's a very good doctor and knows that medical marijuana is good thing.

There is no way the United States could defeat North Korea without the use of Nuclear Weapons and I doubt we would use them - well, unless Trump becomes President. We can't even win against scruffy ISIS members. Would be a long fight and our forces are totally tired out from fighting wars. A dangerous situation me thinks, but I don't think NK will attack. They just want attention.

Yabaru is right. A major benefit of accepting a job on base is the addition of SOFA which qualifies them to use on-base facilities such as the BX, Commissary, Post Office, fuel on base (AAFES), etc.

I disagree. From what I read, life in a Japanese prison is much like military boot camp, which is not hell. Thought but not hell. Now, life in an American prison where rape is common place is hell. Take your pick. Anyway, I prefer to stay out of either one. Still...a horrific crime committed here. Wow! RIP little one.
