Opposition lawmakers including Democratic Party leader Renho said Thursday they now hope to summon the prime minister’s wife before the Diet, possibly as an unsworn witness

    "unsworn" witness? What' the point?

only need to drive 20,000 miles or so before you've saved youself the extra purchasing cost through lower fuel costs. we've saved millions of yen by running our car on WVO. a bit different but a little forward thinking can pay genuine dividends. And less prone to the oil shocks coming in our future....

Obviously not contrite enough to not take advantage of the press meeting to advertise their company name and slogan.

Many many foreigners in Kyoto are doing Air BnB and a 180 day limit will not be a problem for their ocupancy rates. At 10,000en to 20,000en average per night, it will still certainly be worth it.

The new regulations should mean easier registering of properties compared to now, which is good for responsible hosts giving foreigners accommodation that is pleasant and good value for money. It will also quiet some nosey NIMBY neighbours who compalin regardless of whether the guesthouse is being run resonsibly or not.

And hopefully the new regulations will hit the corporate type hosts packing in mostly Asian guests into tiny cheap appartments.

Hydrogen is great if the energy used to make the hysrofgen is renewable energy. If not it is not environmentally sustainalbe or efficient.

Norway, Iceland etc do a lot of this and invariably they use renewable energy to make the hydrogen. It is then effectivey a store of renewable enegry to be used anywhere at anytime.

If it is using regular fossil fuel in the process then the only advantage is clearner air in the city for reduced traffic emissions.

hoped that people would devote some of the extra time to consumption, stimulating the economy by shopping or engaging in other types of leisure pursuits.

... a good idea in line with many European countries, but the government here as totally missed the point - narrow minded pursuite of pointless consumption rather than focusing on improving quality of life - more social and family time, reduced stress etc etc

This is the most difficult industry to make sustainable, with very difficult technological and logisitcal problems (land use, food Vs fuel etc) to overcome. A bolder way forward would be to research and invest in a trans-continental network of next generation fast trains that run on renewably produced electricity.

The whole concept is anothr example of capitalism and those that unfortunately make the big decisions desperately trying to cling on to the delusioned goal of infinite growth

A no-brainer - more commitment to renewables needed - solar, bio mass, geothermal, off-shore wind, tidal etc etc And with existing technology upgrade the national grid to a smart grid that can make the best use of renewable energy once it's made.

Not confusing at all. Japan needs more people like him. And I would be interested to see any of his Abe-inspired works.

with falling population, isn't it natural that consumption should fall? Why econonomists and polititians are blindly infatuated with growth, no matter what the cost?

sorry to so cynical - but the roads and bridges there paid for by Japanese ODA = easier access to rainforest timber. New patrol boats = access to shrimp/tuna etc?

Another example of consumerism and the desperate attempts to keep the economy going by convincing people to buy more crap they just don't need. More people should learn to buy things when they really need them, not just for the sake of consuming and because they have been told to consume.

As is often the case - those with power and money, are fined, which to them is no big deal and probably just be paid off with company funds. The rest of the 99% get jail sentences, often for much less serious crimes.
