Men have been doing this with women for hundreds if not thousands of years. More power to the guys that can pull it off.

Get it while it lasts.

“A host’s job is to support a lady’s heart,” he said. “We’re here to encourage women’s social advancement. It used to be considered a bit vulgar to party with hosts. “But times have changed. These days being able to let your hair down at a host club is a mark of status or success,” he added.

A BS sales pitch

They could save a lot of money if they just opened up to the men outside the host club and be themselves, and the men could do the same to the women outside the hostess clubs, and there probably would be less of a need for these types of places, and you would probably have a better dynamic going on between men and women in Japan. Yet, something so obvious and in your face will not get acted on, but this round about way will be the way ahead for some.

Anything to avoid real human contact and communication outside of paid-friend/lover clubs.

I'd probably do it for free.

There is an interesting documentary on host clubs if you can find it. The Great Happiness Space: Tale of an Osaka Love Thief: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0493420/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Found this of a young Australian guy who did this. Looks like a bit of fun!

Japan’s hosts, denizens of the night instantly recognisable by their spray tans, crimped long hair and tight-fitting suits, are often accused of preying on women’s emotions. “That leaves a bad taste for some people who think we’re just ripping girls off.”

Same can be said about female hosts.

The 27-year-old businesswoman from Nagoya spends around 1 million yen a month

27 year old with that kind of money? I'd love to know what kind of job she has.

“Time is more important to me so I want to live for now, without any regrets.”

I wouldn't call that living, but to each his/her own.

Probably a hostess. A significant number of the customers to host bars are hostesses.

I would also do it for a small fee. although not sure I would make the grade on the looks and hair and medallion front.

I tried to get a job as a host after I had been here about two years, but my Japanese wasn't good enough.

I did meet a guy who was a foreigner host one time, and he liked it, but he said it was really hard on his body.

Hosts have been compared to male geishas and Takami believes the culture, which began in the early 1970s, empowers women.

They began in 1966, with Japan's first club opened by Takeshi Aida in Chuo Ward, near Tokyo station.

Not surprised by J male escort biz itself, it's been growing for quite a while in the west too as the stigma attached to male prossies and female 'users' slowly disappears but more so by the $ mentioned in the article! Read recently that male escorts in oz make around aud300.00 an hour (jpy 25,000). Well done J guys, keep it up (so to speak)!

Have the impression the J model is more about social interaction, pseudo pillow talk/flirting etc rather than sex per se although it's obviously still part of the deal (for most). Also surprised to see young attractive females in their 20s still opting for escort services (and not only in japan) but I guess 'quick nsa sex' apps such as tinder have their limits and do not guarantee quality (and certainly not sweet talk, ego massaging etc)

Why show the same photos twice?

It says she's a sex worker, right?

No, that's a different girl.

If you work in a traditional Japanese company then I am sure your boss or coworkers have taken you to hostess clubs on many occasions. Each time they take me, the bill is around 150,000-200,000 yen for a group of 3-4 and they write it off, the company pays.

I have never spent a dime and the girls are very good at being charming, then the bells rings "DING" time to switch like a game of musical chairs. Next one sits with you... etc..

Amazing companies waste this much money are and are still profitable. Mine is one of the most profitable in the country.

i used to do this a few years back, had a lot of fun. you start out washing ashtrays and glasses, but once customers request to drink with you its all go! some people cant handle the lifestyle because of the really weird hours. youd drink and talk until morning, go home for 3 hours sleep then go meet one of the for lunch or bowling, etc, etc. but yeah, if the girls have got a lot of money, why not?!

It's ironic how the cheapening of sex in society has inflated the premium on it monetarily. The more present it is in the everyday media, the less often it seems to happen for everyday folks.

I guess I'm old fashioned...in more than one way...

The 27-year-old businesswoman from Nagoya spends around 1 million yen a month on the object of her desire—a faintly androgynous beau with bleached hair and a boyish grin.

Damn. I'm in the wrong business

Funny how I don't see articles about the men who visit hostess bars. Are they also "lonely", who pay premium rates "for an evening of sweet talk, flirting—and often sex"?!

I saw a western host outside a club in Kabukicho and he looked bloody hilarious, had the full on J-host hair, winkle picker boots etc it wasn't a good look for him and he looked very sheepish indeed when he clocked me haha.

@papigiulio "business woman" at 27 is either daddys cash or a hostess or more down the pink route... no wonders she has steam to blow

StrangerlandFEB. 23, 2017 - 10:10AM JST I tried to get a job as a host after I had been here about two years, but my Japanese wasn't good enough.

This is hilarious. If it is even remotely true, it was your looks not your Japanese acumen. But considering your delusional statements on JT, your perception is reality right?

This is the only post you made that made me laugh rather than annoy me. Never thought it would happen.

Hell of an assumption. There are plenty of successful business women here in Japan, and they don't have time nor want any permanent relationships. I've met more than a few, and they are just like their make counterparts

yes with 100man a month disposable host only income at 27 years old? please intro or provide example.. otherwise you are a bullshitter.

Based on the articles description it sounds like the women are actually having a good time with other women ie. dyed/styled hair, make-up, etc.

My friend used to be a host and said he didn't have sex with the customers - that way they keep coming back for more.

It's natural to be curious about what goes on in host clubs, but as the "Great Happiness Space: Tale of an Osaka Love Thief" documentary mentioned above shows, they are truly horrible places dealing in what can only be described as manipulation. The documentary shows all kinds of human weakness laid bare.

The clubs mantra is to give the customers the pretense of control, by choosing which host talks to them and forcibly plying him with drinks that he must down on command, while fooling her into thinking the host is romantically interested in her. While this charade goes on, she is drained of as much money as possible. This is done through repeat custom, so actual sex is a no-no. The hosts are ranked by earnings, and naturally encourages them to create repeat customers who can be fleeced for huge sums. Since they become fans of the hosts, customers are sucked into spending to help their host get up the rankings.

While there are similarities with hostess bars, I don't think men visiting them get sucked in to anything like the same extent. Men wanting women also have the cheaper option of using the actual sex trade, e.g. a soapland or herusu.

""Hosts have been compared to male geishas and Takami believes the culture, which began in the early 1970s, empowers women."

He's welcome to his opinion but I'd say that 'bankrupts them' would be nearer the mark....

20 years ago I was waiting for a friend in front of the local train station when I noticed a middle-aged Japanese woman come up to a nearby gaijin, who I suspected to be Turkish, and asked him if he "had any time" and away they went together down the street. That piqued my interest and I began to spend a more time at the station and discovered he wasn't the only one providing those services - I identified 6 men, all of Middle-Eastern blood, working the station. Who would have thought?

Since I've been in Japan, I saw a TV documentary about a hosts. There was video footage of one obasan (her face was pixeled out of course) handing over stacks of 10,000 notes. I couldn't believe it. That guy looked like Fifty Cent stacking $100 bills in his Lambo
